MY APPROACH

We sing to express ourselves artistically through our unique voices and share that beauty with others.  In my studio, we don't just sing songs.  We develop the tools needed to sing any song. We develop proper vocal function by using specific exercises and imagery that target airflow, vocal fold vibration, resonance, posture and alignment, and release of tension.  We learn how music works through music theory, sight reading, and ear training.  We build confidence by silly activities, positive talk, goal-setting, self-reflection, and consistent practice.  Proper vocal function, an understanding of how music works, and self confidence work together to maximize the expressive freedom that makes singing so enjoyable.

I want my students to become their own teachers.  This means my clients learn how the voice works from the inside out so they can make educated decisions about their practice, performance, and vocal care when they are on their own.  I explain the purpose of every exercise I give so my students have a full belt of tools they know how and when to use.  Finally, we work on body awareness, self-reflection, and personal cueing so each singer learns to take home the new coordinations they learn in the studio.

It is important for every singer to understand the fundamentals of how their vocal instrument works. However, most of the time, that alone is not enough to get a student from A to B.  I use mental imagery, visual cues, physical movements, and other tools to help my students adjust their (often subconscious) singing habits.

Although there is a lot of overlap between healthy classical and contemporary singing, there are important differences that must be taught and trained.  Not every style can be learned through singing only classical music.  My students and I work together to free the voice and find a baseline healthy vocal function that can then be molded into any genre.  The repertoire assigned is dependent on the student’s goals, and may include classical, musical theater, pop, jazz, or rock pieces.
